It made a change not to have the alarm on but it was too nice a day to lay in so we made a flask got the bikes out and headed to Tesco’s for a couple of pastries. On through Felixstowe main street, down Bent Hill and onto the prom. It was stunning with wall to wall sunshine, deep blue sky and hardly a ripple on the water:) Our plan was to head to Falkenham church for breakfast but we were so hungry we stopped on our favourite spot on the beach on the banks of the River Deben by the Golf course. The tide was too low to watch yachts coming and going but I did manage to spot the 50 footer I took a nice pic of yesterday in Levington marina sailing up the coast! The pecan pastries were delicious and we even managed to find a couple of handfuls of coal before continuing to the jetty at the Ferry to watch kids crabbing and fishermen loading rods on their boat.
It was then back to the bumpy river path, which we expected to be muddy after all the rain of recent days, but it was fine and we were treated to fantastic views over the Deben:) At the lovely Kings Fleet we turned inland past a work party clearing trees from the Fleet, even spotting a couple of Wheatears in a field. The yellow rape was very pretty here and we soon arrived at Falkenham, the church has now got scaffold up for roof repairs but we managed to find a seat for our second coffee and chocolate bar, a man was cutting the grass and the smell was great.
We then continued along quiet lanes and across fields to the Trimley round about, seeing a hare along the way:) Mag then turned left and headed for home while I turned right toward Levington. I soon arrived at the Marina and the River Orwell, even though it was fairly low, was full of yachts enjoying the light breeze. It was then past Loompit lake with several Tufted ducks and swans having a right old go with each other! A group were making the most of the mud, bait digging in the bay as I followed the river path to Trimley Marshes, stopping off at the dead trees in the lagoon to take some pics. On reaching the river again I stopped for emergency wine gums:) Reaching the docks it was a case of turning left toward Cordys Lane, stopping for a few moments to watch a Marsh Harrier:)
I found a quiet path which lead to an out of the way level crossing which I had only just crossed when a train with loads of containers came past! I continued to the view point where a huge container ship was being unloaded, I collected some more coal by the wooden jetty and then found some really large pieces of coal on the beach at the end where the Orwell enters the sea and altogether we collected 8 kg today.
The last leg along the prom was slow going as it was busy but I took it slow and arrived home around 3. I was out over 5 hours, covering over 20 miles. After a sandwich I had fun chopping wood in the garden while Mag made a delicious apricot and ginger cake – a 5-star day:)
